Connecting with Ukrainian Refugees: Meeting Their Needs with Better Care and Key Services

From the start of the escalation of the war on February 24, 2022, to date, over 120,000 Ukrainians have arrived in the US through the Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) program. Of those, over 20,000 resettled in Washington state (June 2023). Many of these new arrivals are unaware of available benefits and services.

In this training, you will learn how to provide better care for Ukrainian new arrivals based on their specific health care needs. This training will help you build a relationship with these new arrivals; screen for physical and mental health needs; ensure they meet their vaccine and Tuberculosis requirements; and connect these refugees to available benefits and services.

Course Learning Objectives:

1. Explain the needs specific to Ukrainian new arrivals post February 24, 2022.
2. Describe strategies for developing a positive relationship with Ukrainian new arrivals.
3. List Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) vaccine and tuberculosis requirements.
4. Review and document Ukrainian new arrivals’ vaccine records.
5. Recognize the signs of trauma and identify when to make a mental health referral.
6. Orient Ukrainian new arrivals to the US health care system.
7. Describe benefits and services available to U4U participants through the US government and Washington state.
